Welke betekenis hechtte men aan geur?

There are a huge number of works of art which represent Biblical scenes, and even though only a handful of such pictorial representations show meals or cookery, it is an intriguing visual topic. This splendidly illustrated book deals with about twenty episodes which are relatively frequently chose as subjects by painters, The emphasis is on the social aspects of eating and discusses both the figures in such scenes, their postures and gestures, and the moral lessons of the text. The actual food is relatively sparsely shown but is nonetheless culturally interesting. The text provides both a detailed commentary on the images themselves and the broader context from which they derive.

We usually see the Renaissance as a marked departure from older traditions, but Renaissance scholars often continued to cling to the teachings of the past. For instance, despite the evidence of their own dissections, which contradicted ancient and medieval texts, Renaissance anatomists continued to teach those outdated views for nearly two centuries. In 'Books of the Body,' Andrea Carlino explores the nature and causes of this intellectual inertia. On the one hand, anatomical practice was constrained by a reverence for classical texts and the belief that the study of anatomy was more properly part of natural philosophy than of medicine. On the other hand, cultural resistance to dissection and dismemberment of the human body, as well as moral and social norms that governed access to cadavers and the ritual of their public display in the anatomy theater, also delayed anatomy's development. A fascinating history of both Renaissance anatomists and the bodies they dissected, this book will interest anyone studying Renaissance science, medicine, art, religion, and society.

Explores the origins and impact of the most famous book in the history of medical science and a key product of the Italian Renaissance: Andreas Vesalius’s De humanis corporis fabrica (1543). Andreas Vesalius’s fame derives from his writing of what is perhaps the most famous book in the history of medical science, De humanis corporis fabrica (1543), a treatise that within a few years transformed the imperfect art of anatomy into a modern science. This extraordinary work, however, came into being not just because of its author’s genius and industry, but for other reasons that remain (despite a vast body of scholarship) inadequately explored. These questions, the historical moment from which they stem, and the setting in which Vesalius produced the Fabrica, form the core of this volume. Some of these significant factors include the short time during which De fabrica was produced, the debated authorship of its illustrations, and its immediate and subsequent impact on the teaching of anatomy. The book’s significance within the context of present-day views of its historical value, and the ever increasing fascination it evokes among scholars and collectors alike, are also examined.

This illustrated volume examines the different methods artists and anatomists used to reveal the inner workings of the human body and evoke wonder in its form. For centuries, anatomy was a fundamental component of artistic training, as artists such as Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo sought to skillfully portray the human form. In Europe, illustrations that captured the complex structure of the body spectacularly realized by anatomists, artists, and printmakers in early atlases such as Andreas Vesalius's De humani corporis fabrica libri septem of 1543' found an audience with both medical practitioners and artists. Flesh and Bones examines the inventive ways anatomy has been presented from the sixteenth through the twenty-first century, including an animated corpse displaying its own body for study, anatomized antique sculpture, spectacular life-size prints, delicate paper flaps, and 3-D stereoscopic photographs. Drawn primarily from the vast holdings of the Getty Research Institute, the over 150 striking images, which range in media from woodcut to neon, reveal the uncanny beauty of the human body under the skin.https://www.amazon.com/Flesh-Bones-Anatomy-Monique-Kornell/dp/1606067699
